I know in my classroom, the students always spend the first week of school doing community building activities. It is crucial for students to build a community in the classroom before a lot of academics can be taught. Teachers who choose to dive right into content with out taking the time to set a good tone in the classroom and setting themselves up for a struggle later in the year.
Never fear, the time spent building a close community will pay off big in the end and you will see your students accomplishing much more that you ever thought possible.
